About Us

Glass Etching by Matisse was founded by Carmen Dorman-Schweinle in 1991, initially as a sideline to her then primary profession as an Official Court Reporter in the Harris County (Houston) District Courts.  Carmen’s love for glass art and working with glass to embellish it by using abrasive etching techniques (frequently known as sandblasting) was sparked one day, years ago, when she was attending a court reporting reception and as she looked across the room, she spotted an ice sculpture that looked like glass.  She thought, “what a shame that all that beautiful etching and carving on that ice will have disappeared to be out of sight and out of mind in just a few hours.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful if one could preserve beautiful etching and carving on glass forever?”

Well, fuel was added to that spark by her fascination to learn all she could about glass and how it could be embellished by different techniques, including sandblasting. Thus, the byline of “let it be etched forever” came into existence.   After having worked for over 20 years as an Official Court Reporter, Carmen decided to devote her full-time energies and efforts to her love for working with glass, glass art, and glass etchings of all types, kinds, and sizes.  In doing so, Carmen draws on her certification in interior design and space planning, as well as her attendance at professional glass etching seminars under the tutelage of master glass artists.  Her many hours of hands-on study with master glass artists have involved state-of-the-art techniques and levels of all types of professional etching.

One of the few women in the Greater Metropolitan Houston Area to utilize sandblasting or abrasive techniques in connection with her etching and carving, Carmen and her team at Glass Etching by Matisse are able to customize the work to meet the most demanding tastes, whether commercial or residential customers are involved.  In residential and commercial applications, Glass Etching by Matisse specializes in custom-etched items ranging from shower stalls and shower windows to mirrors, residential and commercial windows and doors, etched ceramic tiles, etched granite, marble, and stone, and other etched accessories, as well as having the capability of going on site to do the work on glass that is already in place.

In short, if it is a surface amenable to etching, Carmen believes that her experience, training, and expertise enable her to do the job with an artisan’s touch and a creative artist's fervor.  With her small but talented team enabling her to serve commercial and residential etching needs, Carmen Dorman-Schweinle and Glass Etching by Matisse stand ready, willing, and able to present their proposal in response to your requests or specifications with quality service and integrity.  There's no limit to design possibilities at Glass Etching by Matisse.
